ACTIVITIES IN THE SMITHSONIAN ACTIVITY GUIDE

These are only a few activities included in the Summer Road Trip Activity Guide:

  • Build and fly your own biplane made out of cardboard

  • Make your own Japanese Taiko Drum

  • Create binoculars out of recycled materials

  • Make art with flowers from your garden

  • Cook up a famous dish from New Orleans

  • Write a 7-line poem (called a diamonte) about the night sky

A RETURN TO STEAM-LEARNING WITHOUT TECHNOLOGY

From the start of the pandemic in 2020, most schools across the US were forced to switch to digital learning. Students have had to learn, play and socialize all from behind computer and tablet screens.

So, The Smithsonian released the Summer Road Trip guide to give kids a break from screens, and get them learning and playing with their hands, both inside and on the road!

All of the fun hands-on activities in the guide do not require technology. All you need are some common household items and curiosity! Some activities can be done at home, while others have kids explore the outdoors and different art, science and music events.

So instead of getting stuck behind another computer this summer, get busy learning and playing with your hands, and head outside for an adventure!
